AI doesn't know what it doesn't know. And it will never warn you.

“You don’t know what you don’t know” is one of those overused project management sayings that makes me want to tell people to just say what they really mean.

But in this case, it fits.

AI really doesn’t know what it doesn’t know,
and has no mechanism to recognize when it’s confidently wrong.

That's not a bug they forgot to fix.
That's just how it works.

AI doesn't look up answers.
It predicts what a correct-sounding answer would look like based on patterns in text it was trained on.

Which means it can be completely wrong.
And sound completely sure at the same time.

No hesitation.

No disclaimer.

Just a clean, confident answer that you have no obvious reason to question.
This is the thing most people miss when they start using AI tools.

They assume confidence means accuracy.

It doesn’t.
It just means the tool finished generating text.

You're not getting a fact.
You're getting a very educated guess from something that has no idea whether it guessed right.

The good news: once you know this, you stop being fooled by confidence.

You start reading AI output differently.
And that one shift makes you immediately better at using it than most people around you.
